Traditional treatments failed for a Peninsula hospital worker crippled by hand pain and a New York concert pianist whose arms constantly ached. So the women sought the help of a renowned mind/body expert at the Stanford clinic of alternative medicine.
Investigators now say that Dr. Ian Edward Wickram's brand of medicine was not just alternative but criminal.
The 63-year-old Tracy psychologist is scheduled to be arraigned July 19 on a charge that he had sex with his patients. Santa Clara County prosecutor Jeff Rosen amended a misdemeanor charge against the psychologist last week after a Palo Alto detective tracked down the pianist. With more than one victim, Rosen was able to file a felony charge.
''When Mr. Wickram became a psychotherapist he took an oath to help his patients, not exploit them for his own sexual gratification,'' Rosen said. ''It is particularly offensive that he sexually exploited the two victims under the guise of medical treatment.''
